VMware Fusion 11.x < 11.5.5 Privilege Escalation (VMSA-2020-0017)

high Nessus Plugin ID 139202

Synopsis

A virtualization application installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability.

Description

The version of VMware Fusion installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is 11.x prior to 11.5.5. It is, therefore, affected by a privilege escalation vulnerability due to Improper XPC Client validation. An authenticated, local attacker can exploit this to escalate their normal user privileges to root on the system where Fusion is installed.

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update to VMware Fusion version 11.5.5, or later.
