Juniper Junos MX Series PFE DoS (JSA11038)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 138906

Synopsis

The remote device is missing a vendor-supplied security patch.

Description

According to its self-reported version, the remote Juniper Junos device is affected by a denial of service (DoS) vulnerability where receipt of a stream of specific Layer 2 frames may cause a memory leak resulting in the packet forwarding engine (PFE) on the line card to crash and restart, causing traffic interruption. By continuously sending this stream of specific layer 2 frame, an attacker connected to the same broadcast domain can repeatedly crash the PFE, causing a prolonged Denial of Service (DoS).

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Apply the relevant Junos software release referenced in Juniper advisory JSA11038
