high Nessus Plugin ID 131560

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-4204-1 advisory.

Riccardo Schirone discovered that psutil incorrectly handled certain reference counting operations. An attacker could use this issue to cause psutil to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected python-psutil and / or python3-psutil packages.
