RHEL 5 : libtiff (Unpatched Vulnerability)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 198470

Synopsis

The remote Red Hat 5 host is affected by multiple vulnerabilities that will not be patched.

Description

The remote Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 host has one or more packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities that have been acknowledged by the vendor but will not be patched.

- libtiff: Heap-based buffer over-read in bmp2tiff (CVE-2017-9117)

- LibTIFF 4.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via a crafted TIFF image to the (1) checkInkNamesString function in tif_dir.c in the thumbnail tool, (2) compresscontig function in tiff2bw.c in the tiff2bw tool, (3) putcontig8bitCIELab function in tif_getimage.c in the tiff2rgba tool, LZWPreDecode function in tif_lzw.c in the (4) tiff2ps or (5) tiffdither tool, (6) NeXTDecode function in tif_next.c in the tiffmedian tool, or (7) TIFFWriteDirectoryTagLongLong8Array function in tif_dirwrite.c in the tiffset tool. (CVE-2014-8127)

- LibTIFF prior to 4.0.4, as used in Apple iOS before 8.4 and OS X before 10.10.4 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) via a crafted TIFF image.
(CVE-2014-8128)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied on the package manager's report that the package is installed.

Solution

The vendor has acknowledged the vulnerabilities but no solution has been provided. Refer to the vendor for remediation guidance.
