Ubuntu 16.04 ESM : Gifsicle vulnerabilities (USN-4803-1)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 183692

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM host has a package installed that is affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-4803-1 advisory.

- Gifsicle gifview 1.89 and older is vulnerable to a use-after-free in the read_gif function resulting potential code execution (CVE-2017-1000421)

- A double-free bug in the read_gif function in gifread.c in gifsicle 1.90 allows a remote attacker to cause a denial-of-service attack or unspecified other impact via a maliciously crafted file, because last_name is mishandled, a different vulnerability than CVE-2017-1000421. (CVE-2017-18120)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected gifsicle package.
