Ubuntu 5.04 : awstats vulnerability (USN-167-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 20573

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security-related patch.

Description

Peter Vreugdenhil discovered a command injection vulnerability in AWStats. As part of the statistics reporting function, AWStats displays information about the most common referrer values that caused users to visit the website. Referer URLs could be crafted in a way that they contained arbitrary Perl code which would have been executed with the privileges of the web server as soon as some user visited the referrer statistics page.

Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

Solution

Update the affected awstats package.
