F5BI-DM-000121 - The BIG-IP appliance must only store encrypted representations of passwords.

Information

Passwords need to be protected at all times, and encryption is the standard method for protecting passwords. If passwords are not encrypted, they can be plainly read (i.e., clear text) and easily compromised.

Network devices must enforce password encryption using an approved cryptographic hash function, when storing passwords.

NOTE: Nessus has not performed this check. Please review the benchmark to ensure target compliance.

Solution

Configure the BIG-IP appliance to use a properly configured authentication server that only stores encrypted representations of passwords.
