1.112 Ensure 'Enable service-based extraction for Reading Mode in Microsoft Edge' is set to 'Disabled'

Information

This policy setting controls whether Microsoft Edge can use the Microsoft online extraction service to improve Reading Mode rendering.

The recommended state for this setting is: Disabled.

Note: Disabling this policy does not disable Reading Mode. Reading Mode remains available, but extraction quality may be limited.

When service-based extraction is enabled, the text content of web pages viewed in Reading Mode is transmitted to a Microsoft online service for processing. In an enterprise environment, this could result in the contents of internal web applications, intranet pages, or other sensitive materials being sent to an external service without the user's explicit awareness.

Solution

To establish the recommended configuration via GP, set the following UI path to Disabled :

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Microsoft Edge\Enable service-based extraction for Reading Mode in Microsoft Edge

**Note:** This Group Policy path may not exist by default. It is provided by the Group Policy template `MSEdge.admx/adml` that can be downloaded from: Download Microsoft Edge for Business - Microsoft.

Impact:

Reading Mode extraction quality may be reduced when service-based extraction is disabled. Users can still use Reading Mode, but content rendering may not be as refined.
