2.90 (L2) Ensure 'Enable Live Translate' Is Disabled

Information

This setting controls the automated Live Translate feature within Google Chrome. Live Translate detects foreign audio during media playback and automatically generates captions in the applicable language. Disabling this setting stops the browser from continuously capturing and processing audio streams for real-time transcription.

Enabling real-time translation features creates data privacy and exposure risks in enterprise environments where sensitive, regulated, or proprietary audio is played within the browser context (e.g., internal video calls, customer recordings, or training materials). While processing can occur on-device, allowing the browser to actively hook into and transcribe ambient or media audio streams increases the local data attack surface and risks unexpected telemetry transmissions to third-party endpoints.

Solution

To establish the recommended configuration via Group Policy, set the following UI path to Enabled: Disable Live Translate :

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Google\Google Chrome\Enable Live Translate

Impact:

Users will be unable to use Google Chrome's built-in live transcription and audio translation capabilities. Manual copy-and-paste translation or approved local alternative captioning methods will be required.
