Who’s Really Behind the Screen

Gaining the visibility you need into your children’s online presence

How do you really know who your children are talking to behind their computer screens? Or what they’re talking about? In a world inundated with technology, tablets, and smartphones, our children are at risk in ways they have never been before. From cyberbullying to internet predators, these threats are very real.

Tenable Network Security held a panel discussion featuring security experts, survivors, fellow parents and those who have seen firsthand how an online threat can affect a child’s life. The danger is in our community and at our children’s fingertips. Working together, we can make a difference; our children are depending on us to keep them safe.

Industry Tips and Advice

  • Know what security permissions exist on your kids’ phones and what your capabilities are.
  • Fix your kids’ devices so they cannot install apps without your knowledge.
  • Review their apps and check privacy settings.
  • Set parental controls or install parental control software to limit their access.
  • Learn how to install a GPS locator on your child’s phone.
  • Check their devices to know who they are texting. Be aware of ‘secret apps’ kids can use to hide texts or photos.
  • Take phones at night and make a rule of no screen time in the bedrooms.
  • Sign up for the social media sites your kids are using; pay attention to who their friends are and what they are sharing.
  • Talk to your kids about cyber bullying and being respectful to others online.
  • Know Grace’s Law and share it with other parents.
