ISC BIND 9 'query.c' Function Unspecified Recursive Query DoS

medium Nessus Network Monitor Plugin ID 3978

Synopsis

The remote host is vulnerable to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.

Description

The remote BIND DNS server is vulnerable to a flaw in the way that it handles malformed recursive query requests. An attacker exploiting this flaw would need to have the ability to send malformed requests to the vulnerable DNS Server. Further, the remote server must be configured to handle recursive queries from the attacker. Successful exploitation would lead to the BIND server crashing.

Solution

Either disable recursion or upgrade to version 9.4.1, 9.5.0a4 or higher.
