Ubuntu 12.10 / 13.10 / 14.04 LTS : elfutils vulnerability (USN-2188-1)

Ubuntu Security Notice (C) 2014-2016 Canonical, Inc. / NASL script (C) 2014-2016 Tenable Network Security, Inc.

Synopsis :

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security-related patch.

Description :

Florian Weimer discovered that the elfutils libdw library incorrectly
handled malformed compressed debug sections in ELF files. If a user or
automated system were tricked into processing a specially crafted ELF
file, applications linked against libdw could be made to crash, or
possibly execute arbitrary code.

Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding
description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable
has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible
without introducing additional issues.

Solution :

Update the affected libdw1 package.
