Splunk 4.0.x < 4.0.11 / 4.1.x < 4.1.2 Directory Traversal

high Nessus Plugin ID 47621

Synopsis

The remote web server contains an application that is affected by a directory traversal vulnerability.

Description

The Splunk Web hosted on the remote web server is 4.0.x prior to 4.0.11 or 4.1.x prior to 4.1.2. It is, therefore, affected by a directory traversal vulnerability due to a failure to properly validate user-specified file names before returning the contents of the file. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit this, by supplying directory traversal strings such as '..%2F' in a specially crafted 'GET' request, to read arbitrary files from the remote system.

The installed version is also reportedly affected by several other vulnerabilities, including a cross-site scripting vulnerability.
However, Nessus did not check for these additional vulnerabilities.

Solution

Upgrade to Splunk 4.0.11 / 4.1.2 or later. Alternatively, apply the vendor's patch for issue SPL-31194.
